Garden Watch 2012, Part 2

Some of the herb seeds planted last week have sprouted in their pods like fine frog hair.  Mostly thyme and basil.  I figure the rest will start poking through within a week.

Mini-Me and I tried our hand at carpentry and built two, four-foot by eight-foot raised planter beds.  I'm no carpenter, and an even worse gardener.  But I'll have to say these went from raw materials to finished product rather well.

The finished beds are shown upside-down. I'll dig four small holes for the "feet" to sit into, hopefully to prevent the beds from shifting around.  Next step: prep some ground and get soil to fill the beds.

Not bad for a Saturday afternoon!

Garden Watch 2012, Part 1

Apparently I needed to remind myself, as I seem to do every couple of years, that I'm no good at raising green leafy things from scratch.  So begins Garden, Version 2012.

Seventy-two starter pods planted with basil, lavender, oregano, parsley, rosemary, and thyme, on January 8.  Twelve pods of each were planted, hoping there's safety in numbers.  If they germinate successfully, I'll be able to weed out the runts of the crop.  Hopefully.

I'd considered building two raised beds for vegetables.  A good trip to Lowes reminded me that I'm neither a carpenter nor a gardener, so that idea was scrapped.  At least for now...it's still on the back burner of the "maybe one day" list.

So behold, Garden 2012 in all of its current immaturity!
