Today, October 4, the National Fallen Firefighter's Foundation will be honoring the lives of 122 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2008. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides tremendous support to fire departments and surviving families through a variety of outreach programs. I've never been one to "push" a specific charity, but this one is near and dear to me, and I'd like to encourage you to visit their website and consider lending your support.
Most often, the surviving families of fallen firefighters include young or teenage children, and a wife or husband who is suddenly thrust into having to fulfill both roles at a relatively young age. Through the Foundation's Survivor Network, these families are linked to each other, and to survivors from previous years who lend a great deal of emotional and interpersonal support and sympathy. The Foundation also coordinates scholarships for surviving children.
Please visit the Foundation's website and consider a gift to support their work.
And thank the firefighters in your community...
