Something to think about...

This article speaks volumes.  Naturally when we see others in desperate need, we want to help.  But sometimes, especially in the early days of a disaster, it is best to let those who are trained and experienced provide the help first.

We saw this after Katrina on the Mississippi gulf coast, and they're seeing it again in Haiti - unplanned, unexpected but well-meaning volunteers arriving without any prior planning.  In almost every instance, those good intentions actually hamper the response and relief efforts.

If you, your church, or other group that you may be involved in is considering mounting a trip to Haiti for relief, please make every effort to coordinate that trip well in advance.  Find a respectable organization that has on-the-ground ties in Haiti, and work with them.  The relief efforts will last for months, which means there will be ample opportunity.  There are many others like you that may be planning to go.  But without adequate coordination, preparation, and planning, your efforts may be in vain.
