I've never had a high opinion for Ted Koppel, but in this instance, I couldn't agree more with his position.
We MUST keep in mind the goal of terrorism isn't to kill us. It is to TERRORIZE us. "They" do not like our freedom, or way of life, our ability to freely engage life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When we alter our behavior, when for the sake of "safety" we permit the intrusion of our privacy, when we agree to submit ourselves to dragnet-style screenings...then we have allowed "them" a victory. The goal is not to kill. The goal is to throw our society into disarray and confusion. "They" have lobbed a grenade into our camp, and our response is to not address the source, but instead to intrude into our fellow citizen's privacy, checking his house for grenades. "They" are turning us against ourselves by using the very freedoms we claim to hold so dearly. In response, we quickly agree to trade in those freedoms for "security!"
