Project 365/94
The dogwood (comus florida) has always captured my eye and imagination. Today, Mini-Me and I stopped on the side of the road so I could grab today's picture. I was surprised that he'd never learned the legend of the dogwood flower. Christianity adopted the dogwood tree and flower, with some legends claiming that the Cross was made form a dogwood tree. But the story I grew up with was based on the flower itself. It contains four petals, forming the shape of a cross. The tips of each petal (well, except for my photo anyway) normally have a red or pink tint, representing the blood of Jesus on each point of the Cross. What always amazed me...and still does...is that no matter when Easter falls on any given year, the dogwood always blooms right before Eastertime. How? Makes you wonder if the legend is just a legend....
